MYK Restaurant celebrates its 10th birthday

Recognized and acknowledged as the first contemporary Greek restaurant in Brazil, MYK is commemorating its 10 year anniversary by bringing novelties to its menu

Chef Mariana Fonseca started her professional journey in the kitchen at the age of 18. Her training and working experience were driven by traditional gastronomical styles, as she began her career in classic Italian and contemporary French restaurants. In 2005, however, what was supposed to be a short holiday trip in Mykonos became a long season in Greece, which ended up transforming the course of her vocation as a chef, as she discovered the variety of spices, flavors and culture that the Mediterranean islands had to offer. In 2013, Mariana returned to her home country with significant professional baggage, driving her to open the first contemporary Greek restaurant in Brazil, MYK, while the region’s cuisine remained obscure among local patrons. It did not take long for the eatery to become one of the most coveted places in São Paulo, because, in addition its authentic gastronomy, inspired by the chef’s own experience, MYK’s mise en scene incarnates the atmosphere of celebration, music and joy that is typical in Greek culture, which was still grossly undiscovered and underrepresented in the country.

The dishes attracted and caught the attention of even the most discerning palates. Up to that point, the general Brazilian public was not accustomed to main dishes that exalted seafoods such as squid and octopus, as well as other key ingredients of Greek cuisine, such as olive oil, goat cheese and tomatoes. Today, ten years later, MYK is recognized and consecrated as the first contemporary Greek restaurant in Brazil and, to celebrate its first decade, chef Mariana presents new authorial recipes on the menu. Based on the flavors and traditions of Greece, the new dishes continue to surprise palates, thanks to Mariana’s constant research and her experience in the Mediterranean country. “We tested different things and elaborated endless ideas to create these new recipes. I felt like changing the entire menu, but if I did my customers would kill me, because most of them are faithful to the dishes I presented ten years ago,” said the chef playfully. The octopus served with potatoes and the baked cod, for example, are some of the items that will remain on the menu.

In all, the menu features 25 new recipes, including entrees, pastas, red meats and seafood. Some of Mariana’s bets are: feta cheese breaded in sesame accompanied by orange compote, spiced meat sheftalia *served with beans and tomato chutney, chicken and mushroom pappardelle, Pastitsio, Schinitzel accompanied by Skordaliá, and squid with Fasolada. The new menu is expected to be launch on the first week of July, 2023.
