Augusto Aras, the man and the mission to innovate the Brazilian Public Ministry

Antônio Augusto Brandão de Aras holds a BA in Law from the Catholic University of Salvador (1981), a Master in Economic Law from the Federal University of Bahia – UFBA (2000) and a Ph.D. in Constitutional Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (2005).
Born in Salvador, he grew up in Feira de Santana, about 100 km from the state capital. He is part of a traditional family in the legal environment. His wife, Maria das Mercês, is also assistant attorney general, and his two children are notary publics in Salvador (BA).
He joined the career of the Federal Public Ministry in 1987. He was regional electoral attorney in Bahia (1991-1993). He served in the Chamber of Social Rights and General Administrative Act Inspection (1993-1995), Criminal Chamber (2011-2012) and Consumer and Economic Order Chamber (2008-2014), and was also representative of the MPF in the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) between 2008 and 2010. He was promoted to Deputy Attorney General of the Republic in 2011.
In June 2018 he assumed the coordination of the Consumer Chamber and Economic Order of the MPF with a mandate until 2020. He served in the 3rd section in criminal matters and had a seat in the 2nd Panel of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). He also held the position of general ombudsman of the Federal Public Ministry (2013) and was a member of the Superior Council of the MPF (2012 to 2016).
Augusto Aras received demonstrations of recognition of his performance through motions, medals and diplomas of merit in the areas of Electoral Law, Economic Law and Collective Law, in different courts in the country and commemorative plaques in recognition of the services rendered to the MPF and society . In addition, he was a member of the jurists commission constituted by the Ministry of Justice for the elaboration of the bill for the new Public Civil Action and also participated in the jurists commission constituted by UnB, Federal Senate, Chamber of Deputies and Federal Council of the OAB for the studies for the Electoral Reform (2009).
In teaching, he was admitted, through public examination, as a professor at the Faculty of Law at UFBA in 1989. He is a professor of Commercial Law and Electoral Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Brasília (UnB). He has also been a professor at the Superior School of the Federal Public Ministry (ESMPU) since 2002. His doctoral theses on the adoption of the Party Representative Mandate and Party Fidelity were accepted as jurisprudence (leading case) by the Federal Supreme Court (MS 26.603/DF and MS 30380/DF).
In the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Aras was president of the National Commission for Diffuse and Collective Rights of the Federal Council of the OAB (2007-2009), member of the National Commission for Collective Rights (2010/2012) and the National Commission for Studies Constitutional (2013/2014).
